Sherman to A&M, Gailey out, and other stuff

ESPN - Sherman to be introduced as next A&M coach - College Football

It seems like Tubby’s gonna stay put after all. The article says that the Houston Chronicle reported this morning that Houston Texans’ assistant coach and former Green Bay head coach Mike Sherman will be announced as Franchione’s replacement at noon today. Auburn fans will now say that they knew TT would stay all along.

ESPN is also saying that Georgia Tech has fired Chan Gailey.

It also seems like Nebraska has their top two candidates.

Brian at MGoBlog has all the truthiness on the Ferentz to Michigan talk.

UPDATE: Jeff Bower has been forced to resign at Southern Miss. Good luck finding someone better for that program. This is almost as bad as Ole Miss firing Cutcliffe.

UP-UPDATE: Arkansas has been castrated. Pity, no more Nutt, Dick, and Johnson jokes.

UP-UP-UPDATE: Jim Donnan reported on his radio show that Nutt will be hired as Ole Miss’ new coach. Geez, this stuff moves fast. Arkansas hasn’t even had the press conference announcing his dismissal, and the guy already has another gig.

Gill and Pelini would have to be fools to take the Nebraska job. Why on earth would anyone want to come work for the man who is still worshipped for doing the job you are taking over? Especially considering he was hired specifically to meddle with the football program. I know Gill is a Nebraska guy and is currently at a 3rd tier program, but he has them bowl-eligible. Gill, take one of the other offers that will be open, let someone else suffer under Osborne, and then when those two are gone, take the job. As for Pelini, cut your teeth somewhere else first. Like LSU.

Maybe we can start a Tubby to Tech rumor.

I will be interested to see if he gets any kind of raise, though.

I think right now would be the perfect time to take the Nebraska job, Osborne aside. They are about as low as they can go, and if the new coach even brings them back to being close to respectable he might get to stay awhile.

Maybe Texas A&M just likes old dudes with white hair and glasses.

Sounds like Tubby wasn’t as high on their list as some, including me, thought. I wonder if Gene had anything to do with it.

My understanding (read: the one internet rumor on it that I saw) is that when Auburn AD Jacobs said that the buyout was “iron-clad” A&M realized Tubs wasn’t worth it. I’m not saying that to be mean. I’m saying that figure was created basically so that neither side would ever have to pay it.

What I read indicated Bower was fired. 14 consecutive winning seasons. In not just Mississippi but Hattiesburg, in a 3rd rate conference. USM is doomed to a Bambino-like curse for that decision.

Maybe USM and Ole Miss can swap.

What is the next coach at Arkansas inheriting? It should be safe to assume that McFadden is gone. I would bet Jones leaves early, too. Marcus Monk graduates. Casey Dick, for all his lack of ability was still the starter for a reason.

Of course, whoever they hire, he’ll likely be grateful for the job. Especially considering the new AD doesn’t take over until January. That’s an awful long time to wait to start a new search.

as a supporter of usm football, the bower situation is pretty disburbing. i agree with the whole bambino curse idea. this guy was nothing but loyal to a program that never made football a priority. who do they think they’re going to get that is so much better??

USM is basically hoping that at best, they become a turnstile program where coaches come, bring success for one year, and then go onto something better. I think they saw USF and think they can have that rather than fully appreciating the situation USF is in (i.e. central florida) and failing to recognize the hole that is south miss.
