We’re well aware that Knoxville doesn’t have the market cornered on athletes getting into trouble (they just perfected it). Case in point, one Mr. Jeremy Elder, who doesn’t know it’s wrong to take things that do not belong to him. According to the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office website, Elder was arrested yesterday on two counts of robbery in the 1st degree. These are felonies, people. We’ll wait and see the punishment Saban doles out. Anything less than kicking his butt off the team will result in criticism from yours truly. On the bright side that’s one less player Brian Cook has to worry about.
UPDATE: Tidesports now has a story up. And yep, a handgun was involved.
UPDATE: Saban speaks.
“He is indefinitely suspended from all football-related activities,” Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said via a press release. “I won’t have an announcement on his future status until I have had a chance to review all of the information. The University and football program have strict guidelines regarding legal issues of this magnitude.” (HT: Tide Druid)

Wow, doesn’t 1st degree robbery usually involve a weapon? I think that trumphs anything going on at UT. I remember Elder being one of the last, if not the last player added to last year’s recruiting class.
I don’t know Kenny. I hope not, but he needs to go either way. If he’s guilty, of course.
I hope it’s just a pocket knife at worst
look at those schollies just opening up for that huge signing class.
I have an idea. Just put me in cryogenic stasis until sometime midsummer. Wake me up and let me catch up on all the offseason problems in one grand eye-popping felony fiesta. When I lose consciousness from shock, wake me up again in August - just in time for football to start.
Aw, dang. Just remembered that I’d be missing the spring and summer blooming seasons around Knoxville. Ok, then, since I don’t have cable TV, how about putting my internet connection in cryogenic until midsummer, etc.?
Best yet - how about putting all college football players into cryogenic until midsummer? Then we wake them up and work their butts off to get ready for the season. They’ll lose a semester, but I’m sure we can get the NCAA on board if only to get this kind of news off the airwaves for 6 months.
After all, that’s the secret to Big 10 goodness, isn’t it? I mean, those players are effectively in cryogenic until the summer anyhow, with the snow and all…
The news gets worse. He was apparently carrying a handgun while committing the robbery. There are apparently two witnesses. This does not look good. I have to assume this is the beginning of the end for him.

Students Report Robbery
On Saturday, February 16, 2008, two male UA-students reported to UAPD that they were the victims of a robbery. The students reported that an unknown male approached them as they were walking to their vehicle in the Small Group Housing parking lot shortly after 11:00 p.m. The unknown male presented a handgun and took cash from one of the students. The unknown male left on foot in a southerly direction. Neither student was injured in the incident.
The description provided of the suspect is as follows:
Male
Age 20’s
Approximately 6’ 04″ in height
Approximately 250 lbs in weight
Wearing dark clothing
Yikes. Several people reporting he had a gun.
Saban may not even get a chance to discipline him. The school might and should kick him out. Thug is as thug does.
I wonder if that’s the last player from College Park, GA that Saban signs?
I am from Atlanta, and I can say without a doubt that Clayton High School is by far the worse high school in Atlanta, and that is saying something. I think there is a shooting there every 2nd Thursday like clock work.
Another question: Does the first brandishing of a firearm in the SEC mean 6 more weeks of winter?
“He is indefinitely suspended from all football-related activities,” Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said via a press release. “I won’t have an announcement on his future status until I have had a chance to review all of the information. The University and football program have strict guidelines regarding legal issues of this magnitude.”
Thanks, TD.
It’s hard to take part in football-related activities when you’re in the pokey.
He apparently got $26 from the two students. You can’t make this up!
Hmm. I’m broke. I think I’ll rob some college students. Ooh, there’s two carrying grocery bags full of Ramen noodles. I bet they got some bank.
I am at the point now where I am hoping he was at least on crack-cocaine, at least you could blame it on something else besides being incredibly stupid.
Kenny, I understand where you’re coming from, but in my experience (which thankfully is extremely limited) being on crack does not excuse one from being incredibly stupid. In most cases, it’s just more supporting evidence.
I agree it is definitely not an excuse. You make the decisions either way. I just can’t imagine what he must had been thinking. It is all a moot point, Elder is gone no matter what.
fwiw, i was once held up at 4am in tuscaloosa after drinking nearly every dime i had away in pounders…i think he scored a total of about $15 off of my roommate and i. makes $26 look pretty good by comparison.
