I hate Tennessee

OK, SEC Football Blogger first showed us this video, and RBR has already called dibs for this guy to be their official hero, but I would be remiss if this video didn’t grace our website. Preach on, brother. I couldn’t say it better myself..

That’s kinda funny. I do have a question, though. I followed all his reasoning except for the “snitch” bit. Was that the Fulmer-booster-Memphis-$150,000 thing again? Grad school wasn’t on my radar when that happened, but the news reports (for what they’re worth) suggested that a lot of Alabama fans blamed Fulmer for the whole thing when the booster was at fault.

I don’t want to threadjack this cute little ditty, though. If one of you TSIB types would care to fill me in, just send it via email (Ghost has it) and make a note here. My Spidey Sense tells me that allowing that discussion to start here is a bad thing, when we should all be getting a chuckle out of wunderkind’s rhetorical skills.

Oh, and where was that filmed? I’m assuming it was on the Bama campus somewhere. What building was it in front of?

  2. 2 Chuck March 6, 2008 at 10:25 pm

Yeah I get to hear much of the same here in B’ham a lot. I’m sure he’ll be saying all that again come this October when Bama falls again at Neyland.

    :)

Oh, and he does actually have one point (in a sense). Every company that markets UT stuff seems to have their own idea of what shade of orange is “UT Orange”. Some of them are alright, but a lot of the orange shades are rather atrocious. I’ve got a UT hoodie (wearing it right now, actually) that is a gorgeous orange. But getting a good orange hue seems to be problematic for the textile dyers.

Either that, or the textile plants are owned by Vandy grads…

Aww, how sweet that the valedictorian of the 2008 class hates us that much.

This clip has taken a life of its own. I am very glad I could bring it to life.

Not to sound like somebody ranting Hooper, but Bama fans got upset because it seemed as though Fulmer used Alabama’s cheating to keep Tennessee off of serious probation with Tee Martin. That and the whole secret witness stuff through unconventional channels (and maybe a secret recording or two).

But that crap is behind us, and I’m tired of arguing about it.

  7. 7 ghostofneyland March 7, 2008 at 8:44 am

Seriously, like with Bear Bryant’s tenure, Alabama fans LOVE living in the past. All some of these idiots (not our idiots) want to talk about is how Fulmer “threw them under the bus.”

That was a long time ago. Both programs have moved on, and did we benefit at all from it? Heck no. And now, y’all are over it. With the coaches you had, would you have been able to do too much more? Doubt it.

So, enjoy life with Nick Saban while you can and FORGET about the past. Live in the present for a change. And you have a bright future, too.

    Jeez, children.

  8. 8 edswann March 7, 2008 at 9:35 am

Amen to that ghosts. The ability of fans in this rivalry (not only Bama but UT as well) to continue to leave one foot in the past and close their eyes towards today is often nauseating. Tennessee and Alabama fans and players should hate each other for a couple of reasons. But one that comes to mind is that IT’S FREAKING TENNESEE AND ALABAMA. There’s no other reason needed.

Question: What do eskimos and Alabama fans have in common?
Answer: The can both live off dead “bear” for years…

  9. 9 crimson daddy March 7, 2008 at 9:37 am

    That’s funny Ed. Hadn’t heard that one……..today.

  10. 10 edswann March 7, 2008 at 9:42 am

Crimson, figured all bama fans had heard that.
But since it was in the past I knew you’d want to relive it

  11. 11 crimson daddy March 7, 2008 at 9:57 am

Ghost, we have moved on. But the feelings are still there for Fulmer. You hate Saban just because he’s Alabama’s coach. Why can’t we recipricate those feelings towards your coach, especially with his past indiscretions?

  12. 12 MoonDog March 7, 2008 at 10:41 am

His communication skills are exceptional. He’ll probably end up as Obama’s running mate. If that doesn’t work out he’ll make a damn fine janitor.

  13. 13 hooper March 7, 2008 at 11:15 am

FYI, I have received a few very gracious responses to the Fulmer “snitch” question I had earlier. Many thanks to the Bama people who helped catch me up on their side of the story. I knew it’d be a hornet’s nest to discuss, which is why I hoped to avoid it. Apologies for any eye-rolling I may have caused, and thanks for clarity.

    /threadjack

Back to the story, sometimes it’s funny to hear a fan with no grounding in fact-checking, logic, or any though processes involving anything above the brain stem. Being a fan isn’t always about critical analysis of the teams. A breath of fresh air. (Well a breath of something. Freshness is in doubt.)

  14. 14 edswann March 7, 2008 at 11:39 am

Hooper, I couldn’t agree with you more. The ignorance, one-sidedness, and overall arrogance of a large amount of college fans is to say the least exhausting. So many spend time revelling in, loving, researching, and remembering their own teams and schools that, in their mind at least, no other school compares. And this type of shortbus reasoning does not just effect the fan base but the national media as well (see Big East basketball)

Once again, this is not for all college fans, and this blog proves that. I haven’t been reading it long but I have observed (for the most part) intellegent and well thought out debate and arguement. And THAT’S a real breath of fresh air

  15. 15 crimson daddy March 7, 2008 at 12:33 pm

Ed, we appreciate you and everyone else taking the time to comment. To take this blog to the next level (not that we’ve gotten to any level, yet) we’ll need good, reguarr commenters.

And we may seem all chummy now, but just wait til October.

  16. 16 ghostofneyland March 7, 2008 at 1:26 pm

It’s perfectly fine for you to hate Fulmer on the field. I hate Saban as a coach. If I had the opportunity to meet Saban, I’d shake his hand and smile. (Granted, if I had any warning, I’d have given my hand the ol’ swamp-butt swipe before shaking …)

But hate him for dominating y’all in the series, not wanting an even playing field. I’d have done the same thing if I were Fulmer — I just probably wouldn’t have been as shady in doing it.

  17. 17 edswann March 7, 2008 at 1:59 pm

Ghost, the one thing I have never understood about the entire situation is just that; why did Fulmer fill the need to be so shady and secretive? As has been pointed out, Alabama fans didn’t need this situation to hate his guts.

Why he wasted his energy attempting to not offend a group of people who weren’t exactly his fans anyway will always be lost on me. Saying that is why Bama fans hate fulmer equates to saying islamic terrorists hate Americans because we’re in Iraq. Neither groups needed the added motivation.

And no, I did not just call Bama fans terrorists…. but you get the point

  18. 18 crimson daddy March 7, 2008 at 2:49 pm

Ghost, hate comes easy to UTK fans. We need a justification.

As far as the domination goes, that ended several years ago. That would be like me saying Gottfried owns Tennessee. And it could be said that it was Bama that was the one trying to even the playing field.

    And ed, you’re 100% right.

  19. 19 hooper March 7, 2008 at 3:25 pm

    ed,

I’ll take a completely baseless guess or two. Maybe Fulmer didn’t want everything to be front page as things were going on, so he kept it on the d.l. for as long as he could. Another one: maybe he thought that if the story became public too soon, Bama would try to cover it up before the NCAA got there. Again, baseless speculation.

    cd,

I may be new around here, but even I understand that Bama fans need no justification to hate.

  20. 20 ghostofneyland March 7, 2008 at 5:12 pm

It had nothing to do with Tee Martin. Basically, Fulmer was just giving information that other coaches were giving, but he just had a little more dirt. He was giving all the information he had, and it was the NCAA who was being shady during everything. Fulmer was happy to accommodate, I’m sure.

Don’t know why he tried to be cloak-and-dagger, but my guess is that when he was throwing stuff against a wall, he wanted to make sure it would stick. I wouldn’t just go out and say, “I’m doing everything I can to get Alabama on probation because I KNOW they’re cheating,” before the NCAA did anything. I just wouldn’t. Those guys have to investigate.

Then, what happens if they didn’t have enough “substantial” evidence? What happens if everything turns out to be bogus? Who looks stupid? The whole thing was secretive, which, as a Tennessee fan, is the only regrettable part of it all.

Bama cheated. Bama got caught. That much is evident. The way it went down was shady, and that sucks. But I don’t know any other way he could have done it.

Face it, at UT we have a couple of coaches disdained by the rest of the coaching fraternity. I’ve dealt with it. It’s not a big thing to me.

  21. 21 tidefanintn March 7, 2008 at 7:07 pm

You don’t know any other way he could do it? I’m just guessing, but I’d say he could have done it the same way other SEC coaches did. He did it the way he did because he wanted something desperately to happen (or not happen depending on your chosen theory) and he didn’t trust the NCAA to do it. But if what he was doing was right, then the circumstances of doing it wouldn’t matter and he wouldn’t have hidden from Media Days. Fortunately though, he didn’t tell a reporter “I won’t be Tennessee’s coach” so you can continue to believe he’s a good man. Wait…Johnny Majors isn’t a reporter, right? Okay, good. Fulmer’s still safe.

  22. 22 edswann March 7, 2008 at 7:30 pm

Upon further review of the video, I have to take back what I said…..
The “student” in the video did have such excellent arguments as “dey, dey, dey low down,” “dey dirty,” and “dey some snitches”….

and oh yeah, Ghost, I think your name is spelled wrong… according to our friend, it’s spelled (or at least pronounced) “Nayland”

  23. 23 tidefanintn March 7, 2008 at 7:43 pm

In his defense, not even Tennessee fans agree on how to pronounce Neyland.

  24. 24 tidefanintn March 7, 2008 at 8:22 pm

Also, thanks to EdSwann and Chuck for skipping the tired St. Fulmer discussion and getting right to the smack talk. It’s been too quiet for too long. Gentlemen, your digs are as creative as your screen names, and I can afford you no higher compliment.

  25. 25 ghostofneyland March 7, 2008 at 9:37 pm

Johnny Majors was a chronic drinker, and needed to go. I’m not judging the man AT ALL. We all have our vices. The emergence of Fulmer provided a reason.

Oh, and Fulmer wasn’t “hiding” at media days. The circus would have been if he WOULD HAVE gone. That’s when he would have put his players through crap. He did the right thing by not going. Gallion is the idiot who caused that stir, not Fulmer.
